Central Water Commission to Host Flood Management Meeting

New Delhi, February 9: The Central Water Commission (CWC), operating under the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, will hold a meeting on flood management for states on Monday.

The meeting aims to share CWC’s current services and new initiatives with all stakeholders. It will also seek feedback to strengthen coordination between the center and states in flood forecasting, preparedness, and management plans. The goal is to enhance the effective use of CWC’s forecasting and decision support services by state governments, in collaboration with various relevant central organizations.

States at risk of flooding will have the opportunity to share their initiatives and explore options for aligning them with CWC services in flood forecasting activities.

The morning technical session will highlight CWC’s flood forecasting capabilities, including short-range and seven-day advisories, flood estimates, integrated reservoir operation support, golf monitoring, and new initiatives involving AI and ML applications. It will also incorporate long-term rainfall forecasts from IMD and sudden flood predictions. State governments will share their experiences and initiatives in coordination with CWC.

The afternoon session will focus on preparing, submitting, and evaluating Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for flood management and soil erosion prevention projects. Guidelines will emphasize improving project quality and timely evaluations. Feedback from states will assist in revising these guidelines.

The workshop will conclude with a session led by CWC Chairman Anupam Prasad, discussing key takeaways and the way forward.

The workshop will be inaugurated by V.L. Kanta Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, and will include senior officials from CWC and state governments.
