New Delhi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Vishwakarma Jayanti, celebrated on September 17, 2026, honors Lord Vishwakarma, revered in Hinduism as the divine architect and craftsman. According to mythology, he played a significant role in creation, designing magnificent cities like Swarg Lok, Lanka, Indraprastha, and Dwarka. On this day, artisans, engineers, and workers across the nation worship their tools and workplaces.
Preparations for this year’s celebration are already underway. The auspicious time for Vishwakarma Puja will be from 7:58 AM to 12:40 PM. Additionally, performing the puja during the Abhijit Muhurat is also considered highly favorable.
Mythological texts describe Lord Vishwakarma as the son of Vastu Dev and Angirasi. Some scriptures even refer to him as a mind-born son of Lord Brahma. His birth is celebrated on Kanya Sankranti, which is why Vishwakarma Jayanti is observed with great enthusiasm every year on September 17.
He is often depicted with four arms, adorned in gold and equipped with various tools of craftsmanship. Various texts mention his five faces: Sadyojat, Vamadev, Aghor, Tatpurush, and Ishaan.
In Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishwakarma is honored as a master craftsman and architect. He constructed the celestial realm in the Satya Yuga, the golden Lanka in the Treta Yuga, Dwarka in the Dvapara Yuga, and Hastinapur and Indraprastha in the Kali Yuga. The grand statues at Jagannath Puri Temple and the Pushpaka Vimana from the Ramayana are also symbols of his craftsmanship.
His creations include five Prajapatis: Manu, Maya, Dwij, Shilpi, and Vishwajna, along with three daughters: Riddhi, Siddhi, and Sanya. Riddhi and Siddhi are married to Lord Ganesha, while Sanya is wed to Surya Narayan. His descendants include Yama, Yamuna, Kalindi, and the Ashwini Kumaras.
On Vishwakarma Jayanti, special prayers and rituals take place in factories, workplaces, and offices. People clean their tools, apply turmeric and sandalwood, and pray to Lord Vishwakarma for progress. This festival not only honors craftsmanship but also celebrates hard work and creativity.
Lord Vishwakarma’s contributions extend beyond architecture; he also crafted divine weapons for the gods, including Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra, Lord Shiva’s Trident, Lord Brahma’s Brahmastra, Yama’s Kala Danda, and Indra’s Vajra.
