Samarkand, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha member from the Aam Aadmi Party, addressed the critical issue of women’s political rights at the 12th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. During a session dedicated to “Ensuring Women’s Political Rights,” he emphasized that women should not be limited to merely voting but should also wield genuine power in decision-making and governance.
Chadha noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is moving beyond mere development for women towards a model of “women-led development.” He highlighted the increasing political participation of women in India, stating that their role in the democratic process is now significantly more impactful than in the past. He cited impressive statistics showing that the participation of female voters in the country has reached record levels, with approximately 1.45 million women currently serving as elected representatives at various levels.
He described this trend as a crucial example of the growing influence of women in Indian democracy. Chadha also mentioned ongoing constitutional efforts aimed at increasing women’s representation in Parliament and state assemblies, with a mandate to ensure one-third representation for women in legislative bodies. According to him, women’s involvement should extend beyond increasing numbers; they must also possess real decision-making powers.
At the conference, Chadha clearly articulated India’s stance, asserting that women should not merely be asked to vote but should be empowered to govern. He stressed that it is not enough to allocate political seats to women; they must also be granted the rights and authority associated with those positions. He argued that the empowerment of women cannot be confined to speeches and slogans; a robust framework must be established to ensure sustainable and strong political participation and leadership for women.
Chadha emphasized the necessity of providing women with rights, responsibilities, and the freedom to make decisions, alongside their inclusion in democratic institutions. As representatives from various countries gathered in Samarkand to discuss political and parliamentary issues, Chadha’s call for enhanced women’s political participation underscored the vital role of female leadership in democratic development. He concluded that the goal should not only be to include women in the political process but also to enable them to take on effective leadership roles in governance and policymaking.
