CBI Interrogates Suspended IPS Officers in RG Kar Rape-Murder Case

Kolkata, June 19: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the tragic rape and murder of a female intern at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Friday, the agency interrogated two suspended Indian Police Service (IPS) officers as part of its investigation. Additionally, former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal received a notice to appear for questioning.

The two officers interrogated by the CBI include Abhishek Gupta, the former Deputy Commissioner of the North Division, and Indira Mukherjee, the former Deputy Commissioner of the Central Division.

However, CBI officials have not disclosed the specific questions posed to these officers or the focal points of the investigation. Sources indicate that the agency has also sent a notice to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal for questioning regarding the case.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered the suspension of these three IPS officers and instructed a review of the files related to the RG Kar rape-murder case. He emphasized that a departmental inquiry would be conducted against them and that the role of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would also be examined. Adhikari clarified that the state government’s parallel investigation would not interfere with the CBI’s inquiry.

It is noteworthy that the body of a junior female doctor was discovered on the morning of August 9, 2024, within the premises of the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The initial investigation was conducted by the Kolkata Police, during which the involvement of the suspended IPS officers came under scrutiny.

Subsequently, the CBI took over the investigation following an order from the Calcutta High Court. Both the police and the CBI have identified Sanjay Roy as the primary suspect in the rape and murder. However, the central agency is still exploring the possibility of a larger conspiracy behind this heinous crime.
