Kolkata, June 19: The Calcutta High Court has issued a contempt notice to former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, along with her nephew Abhishek Banerjee.
This notice pertains to the annual Martyrs’ Day rally organized by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on July 21, 2025. The rally allegedly violated a 2018 ruling by the Calcutta High Court, which explicitly instructed all political parties not to block any roads in the city.
Recently, a contempt petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court regarding the annual Martyrs’ Day event. The petition was presented before a bench led by Justice Arijit Banerjee.
An initial hearing took place on Friday, after which the bench ordered that a contempt notice be issued to Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. The next hearing for the case is scheduled for July 3.
It is noteworthy that in 2018, the Calcutta High Court ruled that no political party could obstruct major thoroughfares in the city. This decision was made by Justices Jyotirmay Bhattacharya and Arijit Banerjee.
The bench had stated that a portion of the road must always remain open for pedestrians and vehicles. Emergency situations, including those involving ambulances, require that at least part of the road be accessible. Additionally, alternative routes should be arranged for smooth vehicular movement if necessary.
The High Court had also instructed the police to inform the public about traffic diversions through the media. Furthermore, it warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone causing damage or violence during political meetings or rallies.
Recently, another petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court, claiming that the TMC’s Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21 of the previous year violated the 2018 ruling.
The petition alleges that the TMC’s ‘Martyrs’ Day’ rally completely blocked a crucial junction in Central Kolkata’s Esplanade, causing significant inconvenience to the general public.
