Body of Missing 8-Year-Old Found in Imphal, Suspect Arrested

Imphal, April 6: The body of an 8-year-old girl, who had been missing since Sunday, was discovered on Monday near the banks of the Imphal River, beneath the Singjamei Bridge, according to police reports.

A police official stated that the girl went missing from the Akampat relief camp in the eastern district of Imphal on Sunday evening. In connection with this case, a suspect has been arrested and was remanded to five days of police custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal East on Monday.

The victim was originally from Moreh in the Tengnoupal district and had been residing in the Akampat relief camp since ethnic violence erupted in the state in May 2023.

The victim’s family reported her disappearance to the Irilbung police station, prompting an immediate search operation. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) and local residents also assisted in the efforts to locate the minor.

Police teams from Imphal East and Imphal West, under the supervision of senior officials, conducted a coordinated search operation. CCTV footage from nearby areas was reviewed, leading to the identification of the suspect.

The accused, identified as 28-year-old Laishram Langamba, was taken into custody and subsequently formally arrested. According to police, he had also been residing in the same relief camp since the ethnic violence in May 2023.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to kidnapping, raping, and murdering the girl, and disposing of her body beneath the bridge.

A police official indicated that based on Langamba’s disclosures, the girl’s body was recovered from beneath the Singjamei Bridge along the Imphal River. Preliminary investigations suggest that this is a case of rape and murder.

The incident has sparked unrest in Imphal, leading to large numbers of displaced individuals protesting outside the Irilbung police station in the Imphal East district, demanding severe punishment for the accused. Security personnel deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, but police later managed to bring the situation under control.

A five-member delegation representing the protesters later met with police officials, who assured them that a thorough investigation would be conducted and necessary legal actions would be taken on a ‘fast-track’ basis. Further investigations into the case are ongoing.
