Chennai, March 31: Nainar Nagendran, the BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president, announced on Tuesday that he will contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Sattur. As part of the seat-sharing arrangement within the NDA, the Tirunelveli constituency has been allocated to the NDA’s ally, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
Speaking to reporters in Tirunelveli, Nagendran clarified that this decision was made at the request of the AIADMK and reflects the coalition’s commitment to maintaining unity ahead of the elections.
He stated, “Since the AIADMK requested the Tirunelveli seat, I have agreed to contest from Sattur. I will file my nomination there once the list of candidates is announced.” He further mentioned that BJP candidates across the state are expected to submit their nominations by April 4.
Nagendran emphasized that the change in constituency will not affect his connection with the people or the party’s broader political strategy. “No matter where I contest from, my work for the people of Tamil Nadu will continue. Tirunelveli will always hold a special place in my heart,” he remarked, highlighting his long-standing association with the region.
Describing the assembly elections as a referendum on governance, he launched a sharp attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), accusing the government of failing to fulfill its electoral promises.
He also claimed that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated under the current administration. “We will present a comprehensive indictment against the DMK government,” he asserted, further alleging that there is pressure on press freedom in the state.
Nagendran referred to a recent threat made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by a DMK official, citing it as an example of the current political climate.
Criticizing the DMK’s manifesto, he commented that while the previous manifesto was presented as a ‘hero’, the current one is a ‘zero’. He accused the ruling party of practicing selective secularism, noting inconsistencies in their approach to congratulating people during religious festivals.
In response to recent political controversies, he clarified that the former state president of the BJP, K. Annamalai, was not present to welcome Prime Minister Modi during his visit to Coimbatore because he was out of town at that time.
Reaffirming confidence in the NDA’s prospects, Nagendran stated that the coalition will conduct a strong and coordinated election campaign across Tamil Nadu before the elections.
