
Guwahati, May 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Dhekiajuli Assembly constituency of Assam. The party’s candidate, Ashok Singhal, faced off against Congress’s Batash Orang. In a closely contested election, the voters of Dhekiajuli have chosen Singhal to represent them.
Ashok Singhal secured a significant win, defeating his opponent by a margin of 48,169 votes. He received a total of 111,880 votes, while Orang garnered 63,711 votes.
Voting in the Dhekiajuli constituency took place on April 9, with a remarkable turnout. The area recorded an impressive voter participation rate of 83.29%. The total number of registered voters in Dhekiajuli is 224,186, comprising 112,664 male voters and 111,520 female voters.
This election saw seven candidates vying for the seat. Alongside Ashok Singhal from the BJP and Batash Orang from Congress, Rajoy Basumatary represented the Voters Party International, while four independent candidates also contested.
Dhekiajuli is located in Assam’s Sonitpur district and is classified as a general constituency, falling under the Sonitpur Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2021 elections, Dhekiajuli witnessed a voter turnout of 79.5%, where Ashok Singhal defeated Congress’s Benudhar Nath. In 2016, Singhal also won against Congress’s Habul Chakraborty with a turnout of 80.9%.
Currently, Ashok Singhal serves as Assam’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare. His educational qualification is a bachelor’s degree. According to his election affidavit, Singhal’s total assets are valued at ₹34.7 crore, with an annual income of ₹97.7 lakh. He has no pending criminal cases against him.
The Dhekiajuli Assembly constituency was established in 1951, originally named ‘Dhekiajuli North.’ There have been 15 assembly elections held here, including a by-election in 2009. The Congress party has won in this constituency 10 times, while the BJP has secured victories in the last two elections since 2016.
