Thiruvananthapuram, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making significant organizational changes in Kerala, responding to its recent electoral successes and the anticipated challenges of the 2026 assembly elections. Following the CPI(M)’s disappointing performance, the BJP has divided the state into two zones, assigning senior party leaders to oversee each area.
MT Ramesh will lead the northern zone, which includes Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur, and Palakkad. Meanwhile, S. Suresh will manage the southern zone, covering Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram.
This restructuring is viewed as part of a long-term strategy for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, aiming to strengthen grassroots organization and improve coordination among various party fronts and cells. Shobha Surendran has been appointed as the national program in-charge, highlighting the BJP’s focus on expanding its influence in the state.
The BJP’s recent electoral victories, including three assembly seats in the 2026 elections, have reshaped its standing in Kerala. This is particularly notable after the party failed to retain its first assembly seat in Nemom during the 2021 elections.
The BJP’s momentum is further bolstered by national successes, such as actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi winning a Lok Sabha seat in Thrissur in 2024, marking a historic achievement for the party in Kerala.
These organizational changes come at a time when the CPI(M) is grappling with internal dissent following its electoral losses. Questions about the leadership of Pinarayi Vijayan have emerged, particularly in Kannur, where two senior leaders ran as rebels and defeated the official CPI(M) candidates.
The BJP is keenly observing these developments as it seeks to solidify its political foothold. Alongside the zonal restructuring, new in-charges and co-in-charges have been appointed for various fronts, including the Minority Front, media, and social media. Shawn George has been tasked with overseeing these areas, while Anoop Antony has been named the state cell in-charge.
Party leaders are optimistic that these changes will enhance organizational activities, improve coordination, and prepare the BJP for upcoming political challenges. The new appointments are set to take effect immediately.
