BJP Nominates Rahul Sinha for Rajya Sabha Elections in West Bengal

Kolkata, March 3: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal has announced the nomination of former National Secretary and State Party President Rahul Sinha for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

In a statement released by the party’s West Bengal unit, it was highlighted that Rahul Sinha is a prominent and senior political leader in the state. He has previously served as the state BJP president, during which the party’s organizational strength grew significantly, and it played an active role in various movements and activities. Sinha is known for his outspoken and assertive political stance.

Additionally, he fulfilled his responsibilities as the BJP’s National Secretary with dedication and integrity. According to the party, his presence in West Bengal politics is crucial as a strong voice of opposition.

Elections for the five Rajya Sabha seats in the state are scheduled for March 16. The ruling Trinamool Congress is expected to secure four of these seats, while the BJP will likely have to settle for one.

Last week, the Trinamool Congress announced its four candidates. If no other candidates file nominations in the meantime, the election process will not take place, and the four candidates from the Trinamool Congress, along with one from the BJP, will be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha.

The Trinamool Congress candidates include former West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar, current IT Minister and singer Babul Supriyo, senior Supreme Court lawyer and prominent figure in the queer movement Menaka Guruswamy, and renowned Bengali actress Koel Mallick.

Three of the five Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal are becoming vacant due to the completion of terms of current members Subrata Bakshi, Ritabrata Banerjee, and Saket Gokhale.

The fourth seat, which is now vacant, was previously held by Trinamool Congress MP Mausam Benazir Noor, who recently resigned from the Rajya Sabha to join the Congress party.

Given the current strength of the Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly, the party is likely to win these four seats with ease.

Moreover, the term of CPI-M Rajya Sabha member and senior lawyer Vikas Ranjan Bhattacharya is also ending. With no representation of CPI-M in the Assembly, the BJP is expected to win that seat without difficulty.
