Gandhinagar, May 6: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) convened a crucial meeting of its state election committee on Wednesday to discuss the appointment of key officials in local bodies following their recent electoral success in Gujarat.
The meeting was chaired by state president Jagdish Vishwakarma, with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi also in attendance.
Party leaders indicated that discussions to finalize the heads of elected wings would continue for approximately three days. This process aims to determine the mayors of 15 municipal corporations and the chairpersons of 33 district panchayats.
According to a party official, the meeting could last two to three days, during which a three-phase review of the local body election results will take place. The first phase involved consultations with local leaders and successful candidates. The second phase included discussions with district-level units and party observers, gathering suggestions and insights. In the final phase, these findings will be presented to the election committee for deliberation, with decisions expected to be announced within three days.
This meeting follows the state’s local body elections held on April 26, where the BJP achieved a significant victory. Voter turnout was recorded at approximately 55% in municipal corporations and over 66% in panchayat areas, with around 4.18 crore eligible voters participating across nearly 9,200 seats in 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats.
The results revealed that the BJP maintained control over all 15 municipal corporations, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot, while also performing strongly in rural local bodies. The party solidified its position statewide by winning the majority of seats in district and taluka panchayats. The Congress party lagged in most areas, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made only minor gains in select locations, which had little impact on the overall results.
According to party sources, considerations for candidates for mayor and district panchayat leadership positions include organizational experience, electoral performance, and regional representation. A leader stated that all aspects are being taken into account before finalizing the names.
The outcomes of this three-day meeting are expected to determine the leadership of key civic institutions responsible for governance at both municipal and district levels across Gujarat.
