Bengaluru, April 28: In response to the conviction of Mohammad Shariq, the accused in the Mangaluru cooker blast case, senior BJP leader and opposition leader in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, launched a sharp attack on the Congress leadership on Tuesday. He accused Congress of engaging in ‘vote bank politics’ even in matters concerning national security.
Ashoka expressed concern that it is unfortunate that politically motivated leaders aspire to become Chief Minister while defending anti-national elements for electoral gains.
Targeting Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president D.K. Shivakumar, Ashoka stated that it is a tragedy for Karnataka that selfish individuals, who refer to traitors as ‘brothers’ for a few votes, seek to become Chief Minister.
Recalling previous comments made during the Mangaluru cooker blast incident, Ashoka noted that Shivakumar and other Congress leaders initially dismissed the event as a distraction tactic. He asserted that subsequent developments have now proven the facts.
Citing a special NIA court’s verdict, Ashoka stated that Mohammad Shariq has been found guilty and sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. He claimed this revelation exposes Congress’s true face and its perspective on sensitive national security issues. The BJP leader also accused Congress of practicing appeasement politics.
It is noteworthy that in December 2022, D.K. Shivakumar stirred controversy by questioning the official classification of the Mangaluru cooker blast as a ‘terrorist act.’ He alleged that the then-ruling BJP government was using the blast, which occurred in an auto-rickshaw, to divert attention from the voter data theft scandal in Bengaluru. He raised concerns about how the police could label a suspect as a terrorist without a thorough investigation.
