BJP Attributes Attack on Abhishek Banerjee to Public Discontent in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 31: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stated on Saturday that the attack on Trinamool Congress General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee was a result of public anger and dissatisfaction towards the former ruling party in West Bengal.

On Saturday, Abhishek Banerjee was severely beaten upon arriving in Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. He was there to meet a party worker who had reportedly been a victim of post-election violence following the results of the recently concluded assembly elections on May 4.

In response to the attack on Banerjee, BJP MP Dinesh Sharma remarked that the atrocities committed by the Trinamool Congress against the people, including the murders of many individuals and BJP workers, justified the public’s anger.

However, Sharma also emphasized that there was no need to take the law into one’s own hands. He urged everyone to refrain from responding to violence with more violence, stating that the BJP does not support any form of violence.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP MP Rahul Sinha claimed that there was significant public outrage against Trinamool Congress leaders. He noted that when Mamata Banerjee went to court, people were chanting “thief, thief,” including members of the public and lawyers. He pointed out that the treatment Abhishek Banerjee received, with eggs and slippers thrown at him, indicated the depth of public anger towards him, even after being ousted from power.

Sinha asserted that the BJP does not condone such attacks but acknowledged that the level of anger directed at Abhishek Banerjee is so intense that similar incidents could occur not only in West Bengal but elsewhere, as the Trinamool Congress has committed atrocities against ordinary people.

He described this as the public’s “natural reaction.” Sinha explained that law enforcement is working to maintain order and prevent such violence, but no one can suppress the natural dissent of the people.

BJP MP Soumitra Khan praised the Bengal police for their efforts to protect Abhishek Banerjee during the attack.
