Bhubaneswar, May 8: The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) activists staged a protest outside Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Manjhi’s residence on Friday, demanding his resignation over the alleged decline in law and order in the state.
Under the direction of BJD President Naveen Patnaik, the protest was organized in response to rising crime rates and a pervasive atmosphere of fear and insecurity among the public. Hundreds of youth, student leaders, and party workers participated, voicing their concerns for peace, security, and good governance in Odisha.
According to BJD sources, the current government’s negligence and failures have led to a troubling law and order situation. Women, youth, students, and the general populace feel unsafe. It is unfortunate that criminals are gaining confidence while the government neglects the safety of its citizens.
The party has urged the state government to take immediate and stringent measures to restore public trust and ensure peace and security in the state.
Recent criminal incidents have shaken both the state and the nation, prompting sharp criticism of the state government from the opposition BJD and the Indian National Congress.
On Thursday, a mob in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar’s Balianta area killed GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain after allegations of sexual harassment involving two girls surfaced. Meanwhile, Swain’s family and residents of his ancestral village, Maujpur in Cuttack district, protested by blocking the Phulanakhara-Niali road.
Protesters demanded financial compensation for Swain’s family and the release of his friend, Om Prakash Raut, who was present at the scene during the mob attack and is currently in police custody.
The Commissionerate Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the murder of the GRP constable.
