Bill to Grant Legal Status to Amaravati as Andhra Pradeshs Sole Capital to be Introduced in Parliament

New Delhi, April 1: A bill to legally designate Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh will be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill 2026 is set to be presented in the lower house of Parliament.

The amendment will modify the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014 to recognize Amaravati as the capital. Specifically, it will alter subsection (2) of Section 5, replacing the phrase “and there will be a new capital” with “and Amaravati will be the new capital.”

According to the proposed amendment, the term “Amaravati” encompasses the capital city area notified under the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014. This amendment is expected to take effect from June 2, 2024.

The details of the bill’s objectives and reasons indicate that the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a resolution on March 28, 2026, requesting the Government of India to amend Section 5 of the Act to include “Amaravati” as the name of the new capital for the successor state of Andhra Pradesh.

The purpose of this amendment bill is to provide legal clarity regarding the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The TDP-led NDA government in the state is actively working towards this goal, and the resolution passed on March 28 paved the way for this bill.

During the special session, the resolution requested the central government to declare Amaravati as the sole capital city of the state and to issue the necessary notification.
