Unity in Manipur: CM Khemchand Emphasizes Restoring Trust in Jiribam

Imphal, April 5: Manipur’s Chief Minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, declared Jiribam as a historic district on Saturday. This is the first district in Manipur where all communities have come together to restore peace after three years of unrest.

During a community dialogue program held at New Alipur Rongmei Naga village in Jiribam, the Chief Minister addressed the attendees. He noted that he decided to visit Jiribam for the second time in two months of his government’s tenure, as diverse community members agreed to sit together on a common platform. He praised the people of Jiribam for being the most open-minded in the state.

Khemchand engaged with internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Meitei, Kuki, Paite, and Hmar tribes during the event. He mingled with the crowd and listened to their grievances. One Meitei woman shared her fears about returning home, while a young Hmar girl spoke about the challenges faced by people from backward areas in securing government jobs.

The Chief Minister explained that the purpose of the program was to bridge the trust deficit. He recounted a story from his time as a minister when he oversaw the recruitment of 74 employees through a transparent process in the rural development department.

A leader from the Kuki village expressed his readiness to return home, citing his trust in the government and described the majority Meitei community in Jiribam as open-minded. A resident from a Paite village urged the Chief Minister to continue efforts to establish peace, highlighting the local Meitei leaders’ role in the peace process.

Khemchand assured the IDPs that his government is committed to providing all possible assistance. He stated, “I may not fulfill all your wishes, but I will help you in every way I can. Everyone has always wanted to return home, and our government is making every effort to help IDPs find new homes.”

On Saturday, the Chief Minister traveled to Jiribam district via National Highway 37, covering over 220 kilometers in six hours. He also visited the Jiribam District Hospital in Ninghsingkhul, assessing the available facilities. He noted that many specialist doctors hesitate to be stationed in Jiribam. Emphasizing the need to streamline and improve the healthcare sector, he advocated for a transparent transfer policy for health professionals and assured the hospital of all possible support.
