Bihar Soldier Killed in Doda Honoured with State Funeral in Bhojpur

Patna: The mortal remains of 38-year-old soldier Hare Ram Kunwar, who was martyred in a tragic accident in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, were laid to rest with full state honours on Saturday at Mahuli Ghat in Bhojpur district, Bihar.

Indian Army personnel paid their final respects by saluting the tricolour-draped body of the fallen soldier. His 11-year-old elder son, Piyush, performed the last rites by lighting the funeral pyre. The atmosphere was deeply emotional, with many eyes moist as family, friends, and locals gathered to bid farewell.

Before the funeral, family members offered floral tributes to the martyr. A poignant moment unfolded when Hare Ram Kunwar’s father bowed his head in a final salute to his son’s body. Meanwhile, his younger son Priyanshu, aged eight, saluted his father with innocent reverence, moving everyone present.

Thousands of villagers and people from nearby areas assembled at Mahuli Ghat to pay homage. They chanted slogans like “India Mata Ki Jai” and “Veer Jawan Amar Rahe” to honour the brave soldier. Hare Ram’s elder brother, Jayprakash Kunwar, shared that the family was informed of the accident around 3 PM on Thursday, plunging them into immense grief.

Jayprakash added that Hare Ram Kunwar joined the Bihar Regiment at Danapur in 2009 and considered serving the nation his highest duty. He had been stationed for a long time in border areas. Just hours before the accident, he had spoken with his mother, Shanti Devi, over the phone—a conversation that now remains the family’s last painful memory of him.

The news of the martyrdom cast a deep shadow of sorrow over Nathmalpur village in Barhara block, Bhojpur. The streets fell silent and mourning gripped every household. Hare Ram’s wife, Khushboo Devi, is overwhelmed with grief and repeatedly faints. Their two young sons have lost their father forever at an early age. Relatives and villagers are trying to console the bereaved family, but words seem insufficient to express the magnitude of their loss.

The soldier’s father resides in Nathmalpur village, while his grandfather Ramgita Kunwar is still alive. The elderly grandfather is deeply shocked by the news of his grandson’s sacrifice. At the same time, the community takes pride in Hare Ram Kunwar’s supreme sacrifice for the nation.

Expressing condolences, Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha described the martyrdom as deeply painful. He paid tribute to the brave soldier from Nathmalpur village and extended heartfelt sympathies to the grieving family.

The accident occurred on January 22 when an Indian Army vehicle lost control near Khani Top in Doda district and fell into a ravine. Ten soldiers lost their lives, and eleven others were seriously injured. The soldiers were on their way for operational deployment. This tragic incident has shaken the entire nation, and the martyrs are being honoured across India.
