Bihar Faces Severe Weather: Red Alert Issued for 16 Districts

Patna, March 20: Bihar’s weather has taken a sudden turn. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across 16 districts in the state.

According to the IMD, severe weather events are expected in districts including Araria, Begusarai, Darbhanga, Katihar, Khagaria, Kishanganj, Madhepura, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur, Purnia, Saharsa, Samastipur, Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Supaul, and Vaishali over the next 24 hours. These events may include intense storms, lightning strikes, heavy rainfall, and winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the advisories issued by the disaster management department.

Officials have advised those outdoors to seek shelter in sturdy buildings immediately, avoid standing under trees or near power poles, and stay away from open fields and water sources. Farmers are also advised not to enter their fields until the situation normalizes.

Authorities emphasized the serious risks posed by lightning and strong winds, stressing the importance of taking precautionary measures to prevent loss of life and property.

On Friday, Bihar experienced a sudden shift in weather, bringing rain, strong winds, and hail to several districts. While this provided some relief from the rising heat, it also caused damage in certain areas.

In districts like Muzaffarpur and Vaishali, rain accompanied by strong winds was reported, along with hail in various locations.

Earlier, the IMD had issued ‘yellow’ and ‘orange’ alerts to warn the public to stay cautious.

Just hours after the warning was issued in Muzaffarpur, the weather changed rapidly. By midday, dark clouds rolled in, followed by dusty winds, thunder, and light rain. This rainfall affected both urban and rural areas, including Sakra, Motipur, and Kanti.

This abrupt change led to a significant drop in temperature, with maximum temperatures falling by 3-5 degrees Celsius, providing relief from the oppressive heat.

However, conditions were more challenging in some parts of Vaishali district. Residents in the Goroul block were forced to stay indoors due to strong winds, heavy rain, and hail.

Similar weather conditions, including hail, were reported from Bettiah and Bagaha in West Champaran district.
