Guwahati, March 21: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has taken substantial steps in its commitment to green energy and sustainability.
NFR has recorded a remarkable increase in solar energy production. Significant progress has been made in installing solar energy systems across its various divisions and units. The Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR shared this information on Friday.
Kapingjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer, stated that since the launch of the solar energy initiative in 2011, NFR’s total installed solar energy capacity reached 31.890 megawatts peak by February 2026.
During the current financial year 2025-26 alone, an additional 22.734 megawatts peak capacity has been established, reflecting rapid efforts towards adopting renewable energy. Among the divisions, Lumding (including Guwahati) recorded the highest cumulative installation at 13.334 megawatts peak, followed by the Rangiya division with 8.941 megawatts peak.
Other divisions such as Alipurduar (West Bengal), Katihar (Bihar), and Tinsukia (Assam) have also made significant contributions to the overall capacity increase. The use of solar energy plants has resulted in notable operational benefits.
Sharma reported that the average monthly solar energy production during 2025-26 (up to February 2026) was approximately 918,000 units, leading to an average monthly financial saving of about 6.88 million rupees.
He emphasized that solar energy production reflects NFR’s focused approach to reducing its carbon footprint while optimizing energy expenditure. Strengthening its green energy portfolio, NFR currently has an additional solar capacity of 19.14 megawatts peak under various stages of implementation across different divisions.
Plans are underway to establish several large projects in the Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar, and Alipurduar divisions, which will significantly boost renewable energy capacity in the near future. These initiatives underscore NFR’s commitment to sustainable development and its active role in supporting Indian Railways’ vision of becoming a net-zero carbon emitter.
Sharma noted that ongoing solar energy efforts contribute not only to environmental protection but also ensure long-term economic benefits through reduced energy costs. Headquartered in Maligaon near Guwahati, the Northeast Frontier Railway operates across the northeastern states, as well as in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of northern Bihar.
