Patna, June 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its list of candidates for the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) elections, with significant attention on Bhojpuri film superstar Pawan Singh, popularly known as the ‘Power Star.’ The party has nominated Singh as an MLC candidate this time, alongside several prominent names.
In addition to Pawan Singh, the BJP’s list includes candidates like Sanjay Mayukh, Anil Kumar Thakur, and Sheila Pandit. However, Pawan Singh is grabbing the most headlines due to his immense popularity and strong connection with the Rajput community, prompting the party to take a significant gamble on him.
Pawan Singh is a well-known figure in Bhojpuri cinema, regarded as one of the biggest stars in the industry. His journey has not been easy; he began working at a young age amidst financial struggles.
His musical career started with the album ‘Odhaniya Wali’ in 1997, followed by albums like ‘Kanch Kasali’ that helped him gain recognition. However, his breakthrough came with the superhit song ‘Lollipop Lagelu’ in 2008, which became popular both nationally and internationally, establishing him as a major star in Bhojpuri music.
After achieving success in music, Singh ventured into acting, debuting in the film ‘Rangili Chunariya Tohre Naam’ in 2007. He went on to star in several successful films, including ‘Pratigya,’ ‘Daku,’ ‘Wanted,’ ‘Loha Pahalwan,’ ‘Pawan Raja,’ ‘Sher Singh,’ ‘Satya,’ and ‘Saiyaan Bhail Pardesi,’ solidifying his status as a Bhojpuri cinema superstar. His films and songs are highly anticipated by audiences.
Following his success in the film industry, Pawan Singh entered politics by joining the BJP in 2014. Since then, he has been actively involved in party events and campaigns. His name was notably discussed during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when the BJP declared him a candidate for the Asansol constituency in West Bengal. However, shortly after the announcement, he withdrew from the race via social media.
This decision came amid controversy surrounding some of his older songs, which faced criticism for allegedly making offensive remarks about women and Bengal. Additionally, there were reports of internal opposition to his candidacy within the party. As a result, Singh expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership and opted not to contest the Asansol seat.
Later, he announced his intention to run for the Karakat Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, stating on social media that he had promised his mother he would contest elections, fulfilling that promise by entering the fray. Unfortunately, he faced defeat in that election.
