
Mumbai, 30 December: The death toll in the BEST bus accident in Mumbai has risen to four, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Nine other people have been injured in the incident.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a statement saying that the condition of the injured is stable. The accident took place late Monday night when a runaway bus hit 10 to 12 pedestrians standing by the roadside.
According to officials, the accident occurred as the driver was attempting to reverse the bus at the last point of his route. BEST operates India’s largest public bus fleet.
Police, fire department personnel, and rescue teams reached the site immediately after the incident. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The driver has been identified as Santosh Ramesh Sawant, aged 52, and the conductor was Bhau Ghare, aged 47. The deceased have been named as Pranita Sandeep Rasam (35), Varsha Sawant (25), Mansi Meghshyam Gurav (49), and Prashant Shinde (53).
Following the accident, a significant police presence was deployed to manage the situation and control traffic in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was moving at high speed just before it went off the track and hit the pedestrians. The police are verifying these claims as part of their investigation.
Authorities have launched a probe to determine the sequence of events leading to the accident, including whether any mechanical failure or other factors contributed to it.
