Mumbai, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has made a significant bust at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, seizing gold dust valued at over ₹5.5 crore. This operation led to the arrest of four individuals, including two airport employees, as part of an ongoing crackdown on precious metal smuggling.
According to an official statement, the DRI confiscated 3.5 kilograms of gold dust. The arrested suspects are believed to be part of an international smuggling ring operating through the airport.
In a similar operation last month, the DRI seized gold worth over ₹3 crore from a train passenger in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Acting on intelligence reports, the DRI’s Nagpur team conducted a raid at the railway station, apprehending a passenger who was carrying 2.165 kilograms of gold. The gold, estimated to be worth ₹3.09 crore, was reportedly smuggled into India via the India-Bangladesh border.
Based on this intelligence, DRI officials set up a trap at Nagpur railway station. Upon arrival, the passenger was searched, revealing hidden gold bars. Officials confiscated 16 gold bars from the suspect.
Recently, the DRI has conducted six major operations across the country, resulting in the seizure of various wildlife products, including two leopard skins, 180 live Indian star tortoises, and 500 grams of tiger bones. These operations led to the arrest of at least 13 individuals.
In one notable incident, a person in Jaipur, Koraput district, Odisha, was apprehended with a leopard skin, which was handed over to the state forest department for further investigation and legal proceedings.
