This time is dedicated to remembering ancestors, during which rituals like Shradh, Tarpan, and donations are performed to honor their spirits. A common question arises each year: should one buy new clothes or items during Pitru Paksha?
According to scriptures, purchasing new items or clothes is not entirely prohibited during this period. However, buying large items such as jewelry, vehicles, homes, or iron goods is considered inauspicious. The belief is that acquiring new things may foster a sense of vanity, which is why it’s generally advised to avoid such purchases. Nonetheless, buying essential everyday items is deemed acceptable.
Religious customs dictate that auspicious events like weddings, housewarming ceremonies, and hair shaving should not take place during Pitru Paksha. This restriction exists because the period is entirely devoted to remembering ancestors and performing rituals. The nature of Pitru Paksha is solemn and restrained, contrasting with the celebratory atmosphere of such events, which could disrupt the spiritual seriousness and tranquility of this time.
