Kolkata, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata police arrested three individuals on Friday in connection with extortion allegations. Among those detained is Barun Natta, the former vice-chairman of the Dum Dum Municipality, along with two associates, identified as Nayanashis Das and Sumanth Ghosh. Nayanashis is the son of former Trinamool Congress councilor Parna Das from Ward 3.
The arrests stemmed from a written complaint filed at Dum Dum police station on Thursday evening. The complainant, real estate promoter Sujoy Majumdar, accused the trio of extortion and fraud. Following the complaint, police initiated an investigation that led to the arrests at their residences.
The three individuals face multiple charges, including extortion and fraud. Sources from the state police indicated that they would seek a 10-day custody order in court to facilitate further investigation. A police official stated, “We aim to determine the extent of their involvement in the extortion and whether others were also complicit. We are also looking into the financial aspects and the methods used for the extortion.”
Sujoy Majumdar had previously lodged a complaint during Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s weekly grievance redressal program. The arrests occurred shortly after his complaint was registered.
Local residents have noted that allegations of extortion against Barun Natta are not new. One Dum Dum resident remarked, “He primarily targeted real estate promoters, but he and his associates did not spare ordinary people, including local vendors and small shopkeepers.”
