Aizawl, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Barabi-Sairang railway line, stretching 51.38 kilometers through the challenging hilly terrain of Mizoram, has become a significant milestone for the state. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a year ago, this railway project has redefined logistics and connectivity in the region.
According to railway officials, the line has dramatically improved accessibility, reduced travel times, and placed Aizawl on India’s railway map for the first time. The railway corridor links Barabi in southern Assam with Sairang near Aizawl, marking a new chapter in Mizoram’s development.
In just one year, the railway has spurred transformative growth in this remote state, enhancing mobility, market access, tourism, and economic opportunities. Historically, the rugged landscape of Mizoram made long-distance travel heavily reliant on roads, which were often time-consuming and unreliable. The opening of the Barabi-Sairang line has changed this scenario completely.
This engineering marvel traverses steep hills and deep valleys, featuring 153 bridges, including 55 large ones, and 88 smaller bridges. Six of these bridges soar over 70 meters high, with the tallest reaching 114 meters, surpassing the height of Delhi’s Qutub Minar. The line also includes 45 tunnels, extending nearly 16 kilometers.
The railway corridor connects the national network to four newly developed stations: Hortoaki, Konpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang, providing essential rail connectivity to Aizawl, the state capital. The inauguration of this line has fulfilled the long-held dream of Mizoram’s residents, bringing reliable passenger and freight services closer to the state’s main centers of population, administration, education, and commerce.
Three key long-distance train services now link Aizawl with Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Capital Express offers Mizoram its first direct premium railway connection to the national capital, while the Guwahati and Kolkata services establish dependable links to major educational and commercial hubs in eastern and northern India.
Additionally, the Sairang-Silchar passenger train service, launched by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in January 2026, provides a consistent and reliable connection between Sairang and southern Assam.
Over the past year, these train services have completed more than 1,100 trips, becoming integral to the lives of the people in Mizoram. The success of these services is reflected in the patronage of over 1.5 million passengers and ticket sales generating ₹54 crore for Indian Railways.
Sairang railway station has effectively managed over 554,000 passenger movements in the last year, averaging about 3,300 daily visitors. It has emerged not only as a vital hub for passenger travel but also as an essential part of community life, with local residents engaging in tree planting and other environmental initiatives around the station.
The Barabi-Sairang railway line has also revolutionized freight transport in Mizoram, enabling essential goods, automobiles, and construction materials to reach Aizawl in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.
