Udhampur, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : In Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, a historic marathon took place on Sunday morning, marking the first of its kind in the region. Organized under the banner of Devika Sports India, the event was named the “Devika Half Marathon.”
The Indian Army and local administration played crucial roles in supporting the event, which was inaugurated by senior officials and local MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia. Approximately 1,000 runners participated, spanning various age groups. The marathon featured three categories: 21 kilometers, 10 kilometers, and 5 kilometers.
Balwant Singh Mankotia expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “For the first time in Udhampur, we witnessed a mega marathon. The youth here organized this event with significant support from the Indian Army and local administration. Many organizations also contributed to making this event a success.”
He extended his gratitude to the organizers and all supporting institutions, emphasizing that the marathon conveyed messages of fitness and a drug-free India.
One participant remarked, “This is a commendable effort. People of all ages participated with great enthusiasm, aided significantly by the administration. Continued support for such marathons will enhance the ‘Drug-Free Campaign’ and strengthen its impact.”
The participant highlighted the marathon’s role in promoting health awareness and fostering community spirit, urging more people to take part. “Such events improve our lifestyle,” they added.
According to representatives from Devika Sports India, the primary aim of the event was to establish better communication between the general public and the armed forces while raising awareness about health and substance abuse.
