New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday, September 13, during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. This bilateral meeting underscores the strong ties between India and Egypt, which date back to the establishment of diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level on August 18, 1947.
In January 2024, Egypt became a full member of BRICS alongside Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The day began with President al-Sisi and PM Modi participating in a group photo with leaders from BRICS member and partner countries, as well as heads of international organizations.
Upon arriving at the Bharat Mandapam for the second day of the BRICS Summit, PM Modi welcomed leaders who joined after the expansion of the group. The previous evening, he hosted a lavish dinner for BRICS leaders, attended by President al-Sisi and various other dignitaries.
On Saturday, leaders from the 11 BRICS member countries unanimously adopted the “New Delhi Declaration.” This declaration praised India’s role in hosting the outreach/BRICS Plus dialogue session and noted that India’s presidency has provided “new momentum” for international cooperation and solidarity.
The leaders reiterated their commitment to the BRICS spirit of mutual respect, understanding, sovereign equality, unity, democracy, openness, inclusivity, cooperation, and consensus. This year’s BRICS presidency theme focuses on “building resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability,” reflecting PM Modi’s human-centric approach of “putting humanity first.”
BRICS includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE, with Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam as partner countries. President al-Sisi arrived in New Delhi on Friday to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit.
