Dhaka, June 13: Humayun Kabir, an advisor to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, stated on Saturday that Bangladesh aims to strengthen cooperation and maintain good relations with India.
According to the Bangladesh News Agency (UNB), during a panel discussion, he emphasized, “We desire cooperation with India, which should be based on mutual respect. Our relationship should be positive.” He also noted that regular diplomatic communication between neighboring countries is a standard practice, and the government is keen to advance in this direction.
Kabir indicated that high-level visits and dialogues between the two nations would be revitalized, providing clarity and stability to their “working relationship.” However, he added that a conducive environment is essential for this progress.
The advisor claimed that there has been “significant imbalance” in relations over the past 15 years, which needs rectification. He pointed out that this situation often does not consider the interests of the Bangladeshi people.
He referenced the recent visit of Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman to New Delhi, stating that it yielded positive signals and that the leadership teams of both countries are eager to move forward.
In his statement, he also mentioned that both nations must focus on existing challenges to find solutions and explore avenues for cooperation.
This statement was made during the ‘Roadmap for Trade, Growth, and Economic Diplomacy 2026’ conference, aimed at promoting economic diplomacy and investment in Bangladesh. The event saw participation from government officials, foreign diplomats, development partners, and representatives from the private sector.
Discussions at the conference covered trade, investment, financial reforms, and emerging sectors such as AI and the creative industry, all aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s economic diplomacy.
