Baba Mahakal Adorned Like a King with Peacock Feather and Tripund, Krishna’s Image Seen

Ujjain witnessed a grand spiritual gathering on the tenth day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Magh, Wednesday morning, as thousands of devotees thronged the Mahakaleshwar temple for the special Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal.

Devotees began forming long queues from the early Brahma Muhurta to catch the divine glimpse of Baba Mahakal, filling the temple premises with chants and joyous celebrations. On this auspicious day, Baba Mahakal was decorated in an extraordinary manner, delighting the devotees who witnessed the unique adornment.

Baba Mahakal was dressed regally with a peacock feather and a silver tripund on his forehead, resembling a king. Remarkably, the face bore the image of Lord Shri Krishna, symbolising the union of divine forms. The temple gates were first opened after seeking the permission of Lord Virbhadra. The other deities in the sanctum sanctorum were worshipped before Baba Mahakal was given the traditional abhishek with ghee, water, milk, curd, and juice. The decoration was completed using bhang, enhancing the divine aura.

This particular adornment was exceptional because it represented the combined form of Lord Shiva as Baba Mahakal and Lord Vishnu (Hari), a rare sight usually seen during the month of Sawan. Devotees waited from late night to witness the revered Bhasma Aarti, which commenced at 4 AM, filling the temple with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.”

It is notable that the Mahakal temple features different decorations of Baba every day, aligning with the specific tithi and auspicious occasions. This tradition attracts the highest number of devotees during the Bhasma Aarti, one of the six daily aartis performed from morning till evening. The Bhasma Aarti is considered the most special, drawing devotees to line up by 2 AM to secure a place.

The entire temple echoed with devotion and spiritual energy as Baba Mahakal’s magnificent form was revealed, leaving devotees spiritually fulfilled and joyous.
