New Delhi, June 2: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the joint initiative ‘Mission Sneha Jori’ will significantly bolster Assam’s traditional muga silk industry. This initiative aims to improve the livelihoods of farmers and weavers associated with this sector.
Following a meeting with Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Chief Minister shared insights on social media platform X. He noted that the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) is actively working to enhance economic opportunities for the people of the northeastern states.
The ‘Mission Sneha Jori’ project, which has a budget exceeding ₹400 crores, is designed to preserve and promote Assam’s world-renowned muga silk industry. This mission is crafted to safeguard the interests of farmers, weavers, and artisans linked to this age-old craft.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiative aims to establish a robust ecosystem for the production and marketing of muga silk. It will involve organizing artisans and farmers into collective groups. The project plans to form 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs) and 30 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) across the state.
Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned that the mission will implement a digital traceability system and stringent Geographical Indication (GI) certification measures. This will facilitate global buyers in verifying the authenticity of Assam’s muga silk and handicraft products.
He emphasized that this initiative is a reflection of the vision of the “double-engine government” led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both the central and state governments collaborate to accelerate development.
The government aims to bring Assam’s traditional identity and indigenous craftsmanship to international markets. Plans are in place to promote muga silk products in Gulf countries, Japan, and other global markets.
He praised Jyotiraditya Scindia’s ongoing efforts for the development of the northeastern region, stating that such initiatives will not only preserve industries linked to Assam’s heritage but also create sustainable livelihood opportunities for artisans and rural communities.
