Beijing, August 26: The Yellow River Tunnel, located on Huangkang Road in the city of Jin’an, Shandong province, has officially opened for traffic. This tunnel is China’s first dual-level tunnel designed to cross the Yellow River.
With its opening, the travel time from Longhu Wetland Park in Jin’an to Lanshang Middle Road has dramatically reduced from 40 minutes to just about 5 minutes.
The tunnel’s most notable feature is its unique dual-level structure. The upper level accommodates traffic flowing from south to north, while the lower level is designated for north to south traffic. Each level consists of three lanes, with a design speed of 60 kilometers per hour. The height of each level is 4.2 meters, allowing for the easy passage of buses and emergency vehicles.
In contrast to traditional dual-tunnel designs, which require more land and increase project costs, this single tunnel dual-level design makes better use of underground space and helps reduce overall project investment.
Additionally, the project team has developed a new combination technique to effectively separate solids and liquids within the tunnel.
Following the tunnel’s inauguration, the number of routes crossing the Yellow River in the Jin’an section has increased to 22. This is expected to enhance traffic flow and accessibility between the two parts of the city.
