Guwahati, June 24: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced significant changes in the state’s healthcare services and medical education on Wednesday. He emphasized that the government’s aim is not just to build hospitals but to provide better treatment, modern medical education, and a robust health infrastructure to improve the lives of the state’s residents.
In a social media post, the Chief Minister revealed that this transformation in Assam’s health sector is part of a comprehensive and long-term plan. The initiative focuses not only on expanding medical facilities but also on developing a skilled healthcare workforce.
He noted that the state is currently witnessing unprecedented growth in medical infrastructure. Several new medical colleges and hospitals are being constructed across various districts. A total of 11 new medical college campuses are being developed with an investment of approximately ₹8,233 crores.
According to CM Sarma, five of these medical college campuses are expected to be completed by 2026. Additionally, six hospitals associated with these new institutions are already over 80% complete, while construction is progressing rapidly on five more hospitals, with four additional projects also in the pipeline.
The Chief Minister stated that the government’s goal is to connect every district in Assam with improved healthcare facilities and medical education opportunities. This initiative aims to reduce regional disparities and better meet future healthcare demands.
He also mentioned that these efforts will cultivate a new generation of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the state. This will enable Assam to become self-sufficient in specialized medical services and education, reducing reliance on other states.
In recent years, Assam has emerged as a rapidly developing state in the field of medical education. The government has launched an ambitious program to establish medical colleges in nearly every district, significantly increasing the number of MBBS seats and healthcare institutions.
This expansion is also strengthening the state’s tertiary healthcare services, in conjunction with major institutions like AIIMS in Guwahati and several government medical colleges.
The government believes that these investments will not only provide affordable and better healthcare services to the people but also play a crucial role in the long-term social and economic development of the state.
