New Delhi, August 26: Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala has accused the Haryana government of turning Gurugram, once known as India’s IT hub, into a flood-prone area.
Surjewala’s remarks came after heavy rains caused severe waterlogging in Delhi-NCR on Monday, leading to significant disruptions for residents. Gurugram experienced widespread flooding, affecting both the general public and school students.
During a media interaction on Tuesday, Surjewala stated that the BJP has transformed Gurugram into a city filled with garbage, dirty drains, and floodwaters over the past 12 years. He criticized Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala for spending ₹1,400 crores while making grand claims about improvements. However, the reality is stark; school buses were swept away in floodwaters, and children were trapped for six hours, crying for help. It took a crane to rescue the buses, while vehicles remained submerged, preventing people from reaching their workplaces. Gurugram, once an IT hub, is now a hub of flooding.
He added that a ‘work from home’ order has been issued, suggesting that a sign should be placed at Gurugram’s entry points advising residents to stay home. Surjewala attributed the flooding to widespread corruption in the area, pointing out that the BJP holds all key positions in the local government. He questioned when accountability would be established, emphasizing that the same party responsible for the city’s governance would likely blame former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for the current civic failures. Surjewala insisted that Deputy Chief Minister Chautala must take responsibility for the rampant corruption that has squandered public funds during the flooding crisis.
The Congress leader also criticized the Uttar Pradesh government, stating that areas under BJP rule, including Noida and Delhi, are in disarray. He claimed that the BJP government has turned all of Delhi into a flood zone.
