Silchar, February 24: A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault incident on the Silchar bypass in Assam’s Cachar district. The investigation is still underway. Authorities have urged the public to maintain peace and refrain from sharing unverified information.

The arrested individual has been identified as Nilotpala Das, a resident of Tapovan Nagar in Silchar. According to police sources, the victim identified the suspect based on a photograph, leading to his detention.

During questioning, the accused reportedly admitted to being present at the scene but denied committing the assault or witnessing such an event. He claimed that he and some associates targeted couples in parked vehicles to extort money from them.

Preliminary investigations revealed that ₹10,000 was transferred via UPI during the incident. The police are examining various aspects of the case, including extortion and sexual assault.

This case is linked to an FIR filed on February 19, alleging that seven individuals gang-raped a woman on the Silchar bypass while holding her companion at knifepoint.

According to the complaint, the attackers arrived in an SUV, assaulted the couple, and took turns raping the woman.

Cachar’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Partha Pratim Das confirmed on Tuesday that a case has been registered, and one suspect has been arrested, while efforts to apprehend another suspect are ongoing.

He stated, “We are examining this case from all angles, including extortion, sexual assault, and other potential facets. Until the investigation is clear, I urge the public to maintain peace and avoid panic.”

The SSP also mentioned that they are awaiting the final medical report from Silchar Medical College and Hospital. An official statement will be released once the investigation is complete.

Following the news of the incident, there has been a surge of posts on social media demanding justice for the victim, along with various claims and interpretations being shared.

Cachar police have appealed to the public not to circulate or share unverified information, as premature conclusions can lead to rumors and panic.
