Guwahati, April 7: Assam Police have registered a case against Congress leader Pawan Khera, involving allegations of fraud, defamation, and criminal conspiracy targeting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family. Officials disclosed this information on Tuesday.
The First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Crime Branch police station in Guwahati on April 6, based on a complaint from the Chief Minister’s wife, Rinki Bhuyan Sarma. The complaint accuses Khera of making false and fabricated claims during two press conferences held on April 5.
According to the FIR, the case has been registered under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 2023. These include forgery of documents and electronic records, using forged documents as genuine, defamation, criminal conspiracy, and acts that disturb public peace.
The complaint alleges that Khera presented visual material during his media briefing and circulated content on social media suggesting that Rinki Bhuyan Sarma holds citizenship or passports from several countries, including Egypt, Antigua and Barbuda. Additionally, it claims she possesses a Golden Card issued by the United Arab Emirates.
Khera also asserted that she has undisclosed foreign assets and connections to a company based in Wyoming, USA.
Rinki Bhuyan Sarma has categorically denied all allegations, labeling them baseless and malicious. She contended that the documents shown during the press conference were forged, featuring fake seals and QR codes to make them appear like official records.
The FIR also notes that these claims were widely disseminated on digital platforms, allegedly inciting public anger, leading to online harassment, and damaging the reputation of Rinki Bhuyan Sarma and her family. Concerns have been raised regarding the timing of these allegations, as they emerged just days before the elections scheduled for April 9 in Assam, potentially impacting the electoral atmosphere.
Police officials stated that the investigation has been assigned to senior officers, who will examine both digital and physical evidence as part of the inquiry.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned on Tuesday that Assam Police visited Khera’s residence as part of the investigation, but he was not found there. Sarma claimed that Khera had fled and suggested he might have escaped to Hyderabad to avoid questioning.
