Davanagere, April 8: Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister and President of the State Congress Committee, DK Shivakumar, announced that the election campaign in the Bagalkot and Davanagere South constituencies has proceeded peacefully so far. He congratulated all political parties for maintaining decorum during the process.
Speaking to reporters in Davanagere on Tuesday, he noted that government officials have provided full support to ensure smooth elections. Both he and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah participated in the nomination process for party candidates in both constituencies, showing their support.
Shivakumar emphasized that the Congress party adhered to its tradition of consulting all relevant parties before selecting new candidates. He mentioned that initial attempts to create confusion by certain individuals and media outlets in Davanagere South were overcome, as many leaders later withdrew from the electoral race, thereby strengthening the party. He expressed gratitude to those leaders for their support.
Highlighting developmental works, Shivakumar stated that this constituency has seen better infrastructural progress compared to Bengaluru. He praised the late senior leader, Shamanur Shivashankarappa, for his inclusive work for all sections of society, even at the age of 95, playing a crucial role in the region’s development.
Referring to the results of an internal survey, Shivakumar claimed that over 70 percent of voters in this constituency support the Congress candidate. He noted that the survey included more than 100,000 participants.
According to him, Shivashankarappa’s family has consistently contributed to health, education, religion, and social welfare in the constituency, including distributing free vaccines during the pandemic. He further stated that feedback from traders and minority communities indicates that the constituency remained peaceful under Shivashankarappa’s leadership, with no major incidents or exploitation reported.
He emphasized that this is a source of strength for the party and urged the youth and the new generation to contribute their ideas for future development. Shivakumar also mentioned that party leaders collectively decided to field a young, educated, and capable candidate in the elections.
He added that although the candidate’s mother, Prabha Mallikarjun, was initially reluctant to contest, the party convinced her, and she has since performed exceptionally well in Parliament. He noted that Shivashankarappa also built free community halls for the poor, and being remembered as a generous philanthropist is a significant achievement.
He expressed confidence that the party’s candidate will continue this legacy.
