Guwahati, June 24: The Assam government has issued a high alert in response to heavy rainfall and sudden flooding in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Officials have warned that river levels may rise rapidly in several low-lying districts over the next couple of days.
According to a government statement released on Wednesday, excessive rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Subansiri river basin has led to the flash flood situation, resulting in a significant increase in river flow.
Data from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati and the weather station in Itanagar indicate that 72.8 mm of rainfall was recorded at the Yazali station in Lower Subansiri district over the past 24 hours, with most of the rain falling between 6 AM and 9 AM on Wednesday.
Satellite and radar images revealed that torrential rain between 6 AM and 7:30 AM caused a sudden surge in river flow and flooding. This flooding was observed in the vicinity of the Panyor Lower Hydroelectric Project, previously known as the Ranganadi Hydroelectric Project.
Officials reported that due to the sudden increase in water flow, a spillway gate was opened to release excess water. Reports from the Yazali area indicate that flooding, accompanied by debris, has damaged several homes and other infrastructure.
A senior government official stated that the flood wave could initially affect the Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, and Sonitpur districts. It is expected to move towards western Assam, potentially reaching Dhubri in the next couple of days.
Under the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has reviewed the situation and instructed all relevant departments to maintain maximum vigilance and be fully prepared for disaster response.
The district administration has been tasked with continuous monitoring. Teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and other disaster relief agencies are also on standby for deployment.
Authorities have advised residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain alert, avoid flooded areas, and refrain from traveling in small boats or makeshift vessels, as river currents are expected to be strong.
