Seemapuri, Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : A multi-story building in the Seemapuri area of North Delhi partially collapsed on Wednesday, October 7, raising concerns that multiple individuals may be trapped beneath the rubble. The Delhi Fire Service has dispatched two fire engines to the scene to assist in the rescue efforts.
The Delhi Traffic Police announced via social media that rescue teams are currently working at the site. They reported significant traffic disruptions around the Seemapuri roundabout, DLF Bhopura, and nearby roads. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area if possible, refrain from stopping or parking near the incident site, and to follow the directions of traffic personnel.
This incident follows a tragic building collapse in the Saty Niketan area of the national capital just a month ago, which resulted in the deaths of seven people, including five students, at a paying guest accommodation.
In response to that tragedy, the Supreme Court instructed officials nationwide to file affidavits detailing their compliance with previous directives regarding unauthorized constructions. The bench, led by Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R. Mahadevan, accepted a suggestion from amicus curiae Ajit Kumar Sinha to have officials report on the actions taken in line with the Supreme Court’s earlier orders.
The bench was informed that the Delhi High Court had, on September 7, directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to submit a report related to the Saty Niketan incident, with the next hearing scheduled for September 25.
The amicus curiae indicated that while the High Court proceedings may continue, officials should also present a report to the Supreme Court that addresses the issues raised in the current proceedings. Inspections have already been conducted in areas of Delhi and Lucknow that fall under the Supreme Court’s earlier directives, including Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Saket, and Sarojini Nagar in Delhi and Aliganj in Lucknow.
The Supreme Court was informed that the issues related to the Saty Niketan collapse have already been included in the actions taken by officials and the reports being presented. Accepting the suggestions, the bench decided not to alter the status of the ongoing High Court case, allowing it to proceed.
The Supreme Court has requested the High Court to monitor the public interest litigation case periodically.
