Guwahati, May 5: Following a resounding victory in the Assam Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expedited the process of forming the government. The party has appointed central observers and co-observers for the election of the leader of the legislative party.
According to a press release from the BJP, the parliamentary board has designated Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda as the central observer for the election of the leader of the legislative party in Assam. Nadda serves as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, as well as the Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers in the central government.
Additionally, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has been appointed as the central co-observer to assist in this process.
The BJP has received a clear and decisive mandate in Assam. With 82 seats in the 126-member assembly, the party is set to form the government for the third consecutive time. The Congress party managed to secure only 19 seats, while the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) each won 10 seats. Other parties, including the AIUDF and Raijor Dal, won 2 seats each, and the Trinamool Congress managed to secure one seat.
In this election, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma maintained his dominance by winning his Jalukbari seat by a significant margin of 89,434 votes. Several senior BJP leaders also delivered impressive performances.
On the other hand, many prominent Congress leaders faced significant defeats. Gaurav Gogoi lost in the Jorhat constituency, while senior leader Debabrata Saikia was unable to retain his seat.
The election results clearly indicate that the BJP’s support base in the state has strengthened. As the BJP prepares to form the government for the third time, selecting the leader of the legislative party will be the next crucial step, followed by the formalities of establishing the new government.
