Mumbai, June 8: The legendary figure of Hindi cinema, poet, and lyricist Asad Bhopali passed away on June 9, 1990. His pen gave life to memorable songs like “Wo Jab Yaad Aaye, Bahut Yaad Aaye” and “Kabootar Ja Ja Ja.” While his name may not immediately resonate with everyone, his lyrics continue to live on in the hearts of music lovers.
Born on July 10, 1921, in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, Asad Bhopali’s real name was Asadullah Khan. He was born into a family of Arabic and Persian language teachers, with his father, Munshi Ahmed Khan, nurturing his early love for poetry. During his college years, he captivated audiences with his recitals of poetry and shayari.
In 1949, the Fazli Brothers discovered him at a mushaira in Bhopal, where his unique style stood out. This event marked the beginning of his career in Mumbai at the age of 28.
From 1949 until 1990, Asad wrote songs for over 100 films. His lyrics encompassed romance, humor, and light-hearted themes. In 1963, he penned “Wo Jab Yaad Aaye, Bahut Yaad Aaye” and “Hansata Hua Noorani Chehra” for the film “Parasmni,” both of which had fans dancing with joy.
He collaborated with many renowned music composers, producing hits like “Sau Baar Janam Lenge” and “Dil Ka Soona Saaz Tarana Dhoondega.” The songs he wrote for Salman Khan’s 1989 film “Maine Pyar Kiya” deeply touched fans’ hearts. Tracks like “Dil Deewana Bin Sajna Ke Maane Na,” “Mere Rang Mein Rangne Wali,” and “Kabootar Ja Ja Ja” played a significant role in establishing Salman Khan as a star.
Asad Bhopali received the Filmfare Award in 1990 for the song “Dil Deewana.” Unfortunately, due to illness, he could not attend the award ceremony. He passed away on June 9, 1990, after a challenging life.
Asad was married twice. With his first wife, Ayesha, he had two sons, Taj and Tabish, along with six daughters. His second marriage produced a son, Ghalib Asad Bhopali.
