Mumbai, August 27: Deepak Tijori is recognized as one of the notable actors in Hindi cinema who carved out a unique identity in the 1990s. He starred in memorable films like ‘Aashiqui’, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’, and ‘Khiladi’, leaving a lasting impression on audiences. However, there’s a fascinating story from his career that frequently comes up in discussions.
In a recent interview, Tijori shared that he was the one who initially pitched the idea for the blockbuster film ‘Baazigar’ to directors Abbas-Mustan. This film later became one of Shah Rukh Khan’s biggest hits. Despite this, Tijori claims he has never felt bitterness about the situation.
Born on August 28, 1961, in Mumbai, Tijori developed an interest in acting after completing his education and began his journey in theater. During that era, making a mark in the film industry without a significant film background was challenging, yet he persevered. Through small roles, he gradually established his presence in the industry.
The film ‘Aashiqui’, released in 1990, brought him widespread recognition. Following this, his performances in ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin’, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’, ‘Khiladi’, and ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’ were well-received. The 1990s are considered the most successful period of his career.
It was during this time that the story related to ‘Baazigar’ began, which is still discussed today. Tijori revealed that after watching the Hollywood film ‘A Kiss Before Dying’, he was so taken by its storyline that he proposed a Hindi adaptation to Abbas-Mustan. Tijori envisioned himself in the lead role, and the directors initially liked the idea, leading to the impression that the film would be made with him.
He further mentioned that he also informed producer Pahlaj Nihalani about the project, and discussions were progressing. However, he later discovered that Abbas-Mustan were in talks with other producers regarding the story. During this time, Shah Rukh Khan’s name emerged. At that point, Shah Rukh was a good friend of Tijori. Although surprised by the change, Tijori chose not to create any controversy.
In the interview, Tijori noted that Shah Rukh Khan did not agree to the film until the situation was clarified. Eventually, Tijori encouraged Shah Rukh to take on the role. He reflected that perhaps it was destiny’s plan for ‘Baazigar’ to be written for Shah Rukh Khan, which later became a significant turning point in his career.
In addition to acting, Deepak Tijori has also ventured into directing. He has directed films such as ‘Oops!’, ‘Tom, Dick and Harry’, and ‘Do Lafzon Ki Kahani’. By actively engaging in both acting and directing, he has carved out a distinct niche in the industry.
