Jodhpur, February 23: In a significant development regarding the death of Sadhvi Prem Baisa, the police have arrested a compounder, Devi Singh Rajpurohit, who was later released on the same day.
Rajpurohit was apprehended on charges of administering injections to the Sadhvi, which allegedly led to her deteriorating health and subsequent death while being transported to the hospital. He was granted bail on February 19.
According to police sources, a case of negligence and medical malpractice against Rajpurohit was registered on February 16 at the Boranada police station, nearly 20 days after the Sadhvi’s death.
Following the registration of the case, Rajpurohit was arrested on February 19 and released after posting bail. The details of his arrest and release came to light on Sunday.
DCP West Vineet Bansal confirmed that the charges were bailable and stated that the arrest and release were conducted according to legal procedures. If found guilty, the compounder could face up to two years in prison.
Sadhvi Prem Baisa passed away on January 28 at her ashram located in the Boranada area of Jodhpur. Family members reported that she was suffering from cold and breathing difficulties, prompting them to call for the compounder’s assistance.
Rajpurohit administered two injections to the Sadhvi, after which her condition worsened. She was immediately taken to Preksha Hospital on Pal Road, where doctors pronounced her dead upon examination.
The Sadhvi’s father, Veeram Nath, later brought the body back to the ashram. After the police were informed, the body was taken to the post-mortem house at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, where an autopsy was conducted on January 29.
Following the autopsy, the body was returned to the family the same evening. The Sadhvi was cremated in Barmer on January 30. On February 2, samples of internal organs were sent for forensic examination, and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) completed its investigation within 11 days.
Based on the autopsy and FSL reports, the police consulted medical experts to determine the cause of death. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to interrogate the Sadhvi’s father, social media staff, cook, compounder, and hospital personnel.
Jodhpur Police Commissioner Om Prakash stated that the preliminary cause of death was cardiac arrest due to severe lung disease. However, the investigation revealed that the compounder allegedly ignored medical protocols during treatment, indicating significant negligence.
The investigation is ongoing, and further legal actions will depend on court proceedings and expert medical opinions.
