Kolkata, June 27: A year after millions were stolen from Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee’s bank account, police have arrested a suspect in a cyber fraud case. A senior police official confirmed the arrest on Saturday.
The accused has been identified as Mokulesh Raza. Kolkata’s cyber crime department apprehended him on Friday in the Rangpani area of Assam.
Banerjee, a member of the Trinamool Congress, fell victim to cyber fraud, with approximately ₹5.6 million missing from his account.
According to police, the incident occurred in November 2025. The MP alleged that ₹5.6 million was withdrawn from a government bank’s Calcutta High Court branch.
Police reports indicate that the suspect posed as a lawyer to gain access to the bank. He first altered the registrar number linked to Banerjee’s account, subsequently taking full control and withdrawing the funds.
It is reported that the stolen money was used to purchase a significant amount of gold. Authorities are currently working to recover the gold. The arrested individual was presented in the city court on Saturday.
Notably, the government bank had refunded the MP a year ago. At that time, Banerjee stated that the bank had deposited the money back into his account.
He expressed skepticism about whether an ordinary citizen would have received the same treatment. Banerjee had also filed a complaint against the central government regarding the incident. Following his complaint, police initiated an investigation, leading to the suspect’s arrest nearly a year later. As of now, Banerjee has not issued any official statement regarding the developments.
