Quetta, July 15: Armed assailants in Balochistan have detonated two high-voltage power transmission towers connected to the Uch Power Plant, leading to a significant electricity crisis in the region. The attack occurred near Dera Murad Jamali, where two towers were completely destroyed, and two others sustained damage.
According to reports from the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, the police confirmed that the incident took place late Monday night. This assault disrupted electricity supply to Quetta, Sibi, and several other areas in Balochistan. The attack happened in the vicinity of the Notal police station, where explosives were planted on six transmission towers responsible for delivering power from the Uch Power Plant to Quetta and Sibi.
Law enforcement officials reported that the bomb disposal squad successfully defused explosives on the remaining two towers. Police and Frontier Corps personnel have cordoned off the area. A spokesperson for the Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) confirmed that the 220 kV transmission line from the Uch Power Plant has been shut down, affecting electricity supply to Quetta, Sibi, and surrounding regions.
This incident follows a recent attack on July 6, where armed attackers targeted a police checkpoint in the Ziarat district of Balochistan, resulting in the deaths of at least nine police officers, including two station house officers (SHOs).
Deputy Commissioner Abdul Qudoos Achakzai confirmed the fatalities from the Ziarat incident, stating that five police personnel remain unaccounted for. Additional police forces have been dispatched to the area to search for the missing officers.
This surge in violence comes at a time when attacks on police and law enforcement personnel have been increasing, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which are bordering provinces in Pakistan.
