New Delhi, September 3: Amid ongoing global geopolitical shifts, India and Belgium are emphasizing the enhancement of defense cooperation. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh held significant delegation-level talks with Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken in New Delhi on Thursday. Several memorandums of understanding and contracts were signed under defense industrial cooperation.
These agreements aim to leverage Belgium’s technology alongside India’s skills and capabilities. During the discussions, both nations explored ways to advance defense and security collaboration and enhance partnerships between their defense industries. Rajnath Singh remarked, “Today, I had a very meaningful meeting with Belgium’s Defense and Trade Minister Theo Francken in New Delhi. We reviewed the entire spectrum of defense relations and industrial cooperation between India and Belgium.”
He noted that the world is currently facing significant geopolitical and economic crises. While many of these challenges are not caused by India or Belgium, both countries must confront them together. In such times, meetings with a friendly and important partner country provide a valuable opportunity for the exchange of ideas and perspectives.
Singh highlighted that the relationship between India and Belgium has long been strong and friendly, based on mutual respect, democratic values, and a shared commitment to a rules-based global order. He also referenced the India-Belgium Strategic Dialogue held in July 2026, which established an institutional framework to advance bilateral relations, with defense and security cooperation as key areas.
Rajnath Singh emphasized that there are considerable opportunities to broaden defense cooperation between India and Belgium. He particularly noted the need to strengthen collaboration between their defense industries. Singh expressed India’s openness to greater cooperation with Belgian and Indian defense companies, which is crucial for advancing industrial partnerships, technological collaboration, and defense production opportunities.
Recalling Theo Francken’s visit to India, Singh mentioned that this is Francken’s second trip as Belgium’s Defense Minister. He reminisced about their previous meetings in March 2025, which included Belgian Princess Astrid. Singh stated that these meetings have contributed to strengthening the partnership between the two nations. This meeting of defense ministers comes at a time when the world is facing rapidly changing security and economic landscapes. Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine have posed new challenges to the international security framework.
