Warsaw, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar paid tribute on Saturday at the Kolhapur Memorial in Warsaw, a site that commemorates India’s humanitarian efforts during World War II. The memorial symbolizes the shelter provided to nearly 5,000 Polish women and children during the conflict.
Referencing the inscription at the memorial, which reads, “We remember India, with heartfelt gratitude,” Jaishankar emphasized the lasting appreciation of the Polish people for India’s generosity.
In a post on social media platform X, he stated, “I paid tribute at the Kolhapur Memorial in Warsaw, remembering the shelter given to 5,000 Polish women and children during World War II. This act of kindness remains fresh in the memory of the Polish people.”
The Kolhapur Memorial was established in honor of the royal family of Kolhapur, which played a crucial role in providing refuge to displaced Polish individuals during the war.
Jaishankar also visited the Dobri Maharaja Memorial in Warsaw, which honors Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja of Nawanagar for his compassion towards 1,000 Polish children during World War II.
He was joined by Polish MP Kinga Gajewska and Piotr Krasnodebski, the mayor of Ochota, during this visit. Jaishankar expressed his gratitude on X, stating, “Today, I visited the ‘Dobri Maharaja’ memorial in Warsaw. Thank you to MP Kinga Gajewska and Mayor Piotr Krasnodebski for joining me. Jam Saheb Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji is lovingly remembered for caring for 1,000 Polish children during World War II. His warmth and compassion have formed a lasting bridge between India and Poland.”
The Dobri Maharaja Memorial honors the kindness shown by Jam Saheb during the war, as he provided shelter to over a thousand Polish children, who today remember him as Dobri Maharaja in Poland.
His generosity continues to resonate among the Polish people and remains one of the most poignant chapters in the relationship between India and Poland.
On Friday, Jaishankar met with Polish President Karol Nawrocki in Warsaw to discuss the positive trajectory of the India-Poland strategic partnership.
He remarked on X, “It was great to meet President Karol Nawrocki of Poland. Our discussions focused on the positive direction of our strategic partnership, including exchanges on the Ukraine conflict, the Middle East/West Asia, IMEC, and G20.”
Jaishankar also met with the India-Poland parliamentary group to share insights on shaping contemporary relations between the two nations.
