Mumbai, April 26: Social activist Anna Hazare has responded to the recent defection of seven Members of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He emphasized the need for a stringent anti-defection law, stating that individuals often switch parties based on personal interests.
In a conversation, Hazare remarked, “The Constitution does not mention political parties. It is always focused on the welfare of society and the nation. Today, disputes and conflicts in society are escalating due to political parties. People shift from one party to another where they see personal gain. Therefore, a strict anti-defection law should be established.”
He added that if such a law were implemented, these kinds of mistakes would not occur. While he refrained from commenting on the MPs’ defections, he urged the public to reflect on the situation.
Hazare referred to voters as ‘kings,’ stating, “Voters are paramount, and it is up to them to decide whom to vote for—the right person or the wrong one. If voters make informed decisions, the irregularities prevalent in all parties and factions can be rectified. There is a vicious cycle of power and money that continues to perpetuate these wrongdoings.”
Notably, the AAP faced a significant setback two days ago when seven Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha and Harbhajan Singh, defected. Tensions had been brewing between Raghav Chadha and other top AAP leaders for several days.
The rift within the AAP became public when Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, and Sandeep Pathak announced their departure from the party at a press conference. They declared their resignation from the AAP and their decision to join the BJP. Raghav Chadha also named four other MPs who left the AAP.
Following the press conference, Chadha, Mittal, and Pathak officially joined the BJP at the party’s office, where BJP National President Nitin Naveen welcomed them. Additionally, four other Rajya Sabha MPs—Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Vikram Sahni, and Rajinder Gupta—were also welcomed into the party.
