New Delhi, April 1: In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Punjab Kings secured a thrilling victory over Gujarat Titans by 3 wickets on Tuesday. Yuzvendra Chahal, the spinner for Punjab Kings, took 2 wickets for just 28 runs, playing a crucial role in his team’s success.
Former Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble commended Chahal’s strategic acumen during the match. Chahal dismissed Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill (39) and Jos Buttler (38) at pivotal moments, which Kumble noted were crucial for the team’s victory.
Thanks to Chahal’s impressive bowling and Vijaykumar Vaishak’s performance (34 runs for 3 wickets), Punjab Kings restricted Gujarat Titans to 162/8 and chased down the target in just 19.1 overs.
Speaking on ‘JioHotstar’, Kumble remarked, “Yuzvendra Chahal is very smart. He varies his line and length and changes his pace effectively. In essence, he experiments wisely. He didn’t overdo the variations to trap the batsmen. Instead, he bowled slightly wider balls, showing great intelligence in understanding the pitch conditions. He aimed to bowl towards larger areas of the field, knowing that any batsman attempting a shot there would need to connect perfectly, which they failed to do.”
Kumble added, “Chahal’s wickets of Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler came at the perfect time for Punjab Kings, especially as Gill was looking to capitalize on his strong start. Unfortunately for Gujarat Titans, their usual strategy of having a batsman anchor the innings for 15 overs did not pay off this time.”
Kumble also questioned the use of fast bowler Prasidh Krishna in the Gujarat Titans lineup. Krishna was brought in during the 13th over, and Kumble suggested that the previous season’s Purple Cap winner should have bowled earlier in the innings.
