Bhubaneswar, April 9: A retired government official has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife with a knife at their residence in Swastik Nagar, Kuha village, under the jurisdiction of the Airfield police station. The arrest took place on Wednesday, as confirmed by the Commissionerate Police.
The accused, 62-year-old Debaraj Sarangi, was a former senior accountant at the Attorney General’s office and had retired nearly two years ago. Originally from Nayagarh district, Sarangi had been living with his 55-year-old wife, Priyamvada, in the Airfield police station area.
According to police sources, Sarangi was reportedly under mental stress. On Wednesday, he insisted on leaving the house, which his wife opposed, leading to a heated argument and a physical altercation between them. In a sudden fit of rage, Sarangi allegedly attacked Priyamvada with his fists before stabbing her multiple times in the face and neck, resulting in her death.
After the incident, Sarangi reportedly handed over some cash and the victim’s gold jewelry to their daughter, who resides in the Patrapada area of the city. He later surrendered at the Airfield police station, confessing to the crime.
Their daughter, Arpita, informed reporters that her father had been suffering from a liver infection for the past six months. His diabetes had also worsened recently, contributing to his gradual weight loss. She mentioned that she had tried to comfort him the day before, assuring him that he would recover soon.
During the investigation, officials discovered that Sarangi had been dealing with diabetes, high blood pressure, and liver-related illnesses for an extended period, which led to severe mental depression. Police sources further claimed that Sarangi had been experiencing mental stress and insomnia prior to the incident, which may have triggered his aggressive behavior.
Following his confession and surrender, Sarangi was arrested by the police and subsequently presented in court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
