Amaravati, April 7: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu launched the ‘Jaldhara’ program on Monday, aimed at enhancing water security across the state through a comprehensive 100-day action plan.
The ‘Jaldhara’ initiative focuses on excavating tanks, repairing drains, replenishing groundwater, and promoting water conservation to ensure water availability for every acre and instill confidence in farmers.
The program was inaugurated in Anantapur district, a region sensitive to drought in the Rayalaseema area. The Chief Minister emphasized that the government has initiated a public movement for water conservation, urging every citizen to participate, led by members of 60,000 water user associations.
Naidu highlighted the importance of utilizing soil as a natural reservoir for more effective water management. He appealed to citizens, government officials, and water user associations to work together to raise groundwater levels.
He stated, “We must ensure that groundwater levels reach a depth of 6 meters before the monsoon and do not drop below 3 meters after it. If we achieve this, the state will no longer face a water crisis.”
The Chief Minister also stressed the need to fill reservoirs to their full capacity to ensure water availability at all times. He underscored the importance of halting the flow of running water, securing stagnant water, and filling reservoirs.
Naidu reported significant progress through initiatives like percolation pits, check dams, sprinkler irrigation, and micro-irrigation. Due to these conservation measures, groundwater levels have risen by 1.92 meters.
In 2024, the groundwater level in Anantapur district was at 13.36 meters, which has now improved to 11.25 meters due to effective water management.
He remarked, “Development, industry, welfare, and prosperity are only possible with water. Anantapur, once considered a desert, has now become a leading horticultural area due to effective water management and conservation.”
Naidu noted that for years, Anantapur faced water scarcity, but the TDP government provided support and input subsidies to farmers. He mentioned the launch of a drip irrigation program to ensure efficient water use in the district, with the government previously offering subsidies of up to 90% on drip irrigation equipment.
He reminded that the previously presented micro-irrigation report has now become a standard across the country. Currently, Andhra Pradesh ranks number one in micro-irrigation, having invested ₹1,031 crores. This is why the Rayalaseema region has become a hub for horticulture, placing the state at the forefront of this sector in the country.
